Join us to knit by the campfire!
This Spring season we'll knit by a campfire at fun, familiar locations!
Knitting by a campfire is a fun and easy excursion to knit at different outdoors locations in the Helsinki region. The locations are chosen for their accessibility and availability by public transportation.
The events host knitting outdoors in great company, enjoying hot beverages, fresh air, and the crackling of a campfire depending on the conditions on location and possible restrictions in place at that time.
The event is open for all to participate. You'll need to bring your own snacks and take care of your transportation. The organisation offers everyone a warm beverage, a choice between hot berry juice / tea / coffee. Remember to bring a mug.
You can travel to location either on your own or join the event lead to travel from a rendezvous point using public transportation.

17.5. Storträsk - Sipoonkorpi
Storträsk is one of our favourite locations for knitting by a campfire. Situated next to a lovely, fairly large pond stands a cooking shelter with wooden benches. Great for knitting outside even with a slight drizzle of rain.
This cooking shelter is also fairly far away from the biggest highways, and therefore a bit more quiet.
The gravel path from the parking lot and bus stops is fairly wide and mostly even with some differences in elevation on the way.
7.6. Kaitalampi - Espoo
Kaitalampi is also a regular location we like to visit. The gravel path to the cooking shelter is mostly easy to traverse. The way is pretty wide and level with some differences in elevation.
Kaitalampi is a well-liked recreational area, especially during the weekends, but there's plenty of space to sit around the area near the cooking shelter.

Answers to frequently asked questions:
For whom is the event suitable?
These gentle day treks are perfect for someone who enjoys spending time outdoors and likes the idea of camping, and wishes to experience knitting at the lakeside or in the forest.
Our campsites are chosen based on their accessibility to as many people as possible. We aim to ensure that the trek from the bus stop or the parking lot should be only a kilometer at most, and that the routes themselves were as easy as possible without steep climbs or descents.
The chosen sites should be accessible with an HSL ticket, and the participants are sent a travel plan with routes, addresses, timetables, and a packing list.
To partake you don't have to have any previous experience camping or lighting campfires.
Because we will be sharing the campsites with others visiting the outdoors, it's likely that we'll run into other people, and even possibly some pet dogs. The participants will not be insured on behalf of Neulojat ry knitting organisation.
What to expect?
A typical knit around a campfire takes us to visit a cooking shelter in a national park or similar outdoors destination. The participants either make their own way to the starting point or travel there with us using public transportation.
If there's no regional prohibitions set for lighting fires, and there's wood available, we'll light a small campfire, and at least one portable stove will be brought along.
We'll stay at the campsite for two to three hours, mainly sitting and knitting outdoors, after which it's possible to join us on the trip back using public transportation. After the event has ended, you can also opt to make your own way back on your own time independently.
On behalf of the organisation, knitters are also offered options of warm beverages to enjoy at the campsite.
Please do note that the event is fully outdoors, and depending on the weather, temperatures can be chilly or even cold!
Remember to dress warm.
What are the expenses?
Partaking in the event is free of charge. Everyone will be responsible for their own travel expenses, and any snacks they bring. Everyone will also be responsible for preparing for the trek with proper clothing for the weather and time of year.
What do I need to bring?
We recommend to dress up warm enough, and with weather appropriate gear. We will be sitting and staying put outdoors and exposed to the elements. It might get a bit chilly.
A warm seat pad is a must-have, and some may even bring their own portable folding chairs. For gloves we recommend wearing some you are able to knit with while wearing them. Wearing gloves is especially important during treks later on in the year.
We recommend to bring along a knit that will not be ruined if it ends up smelling of wood smoke and/or having some pine needles stuck.
You should also bring your own mug and any other dishes or gear you need, your own snacks, drinking water, and optionally a thermos full of something warm to drink even before we get our water boiling.
The events are held with a rain check. A few drops of rain will not prevent us from going, but if the weather gets rough, the event will be cancelled for that day. We will keep an active eye out for the forecasts leading up to the event, and will notify the participants with any changes in plans. Notifications beforethe event via email, and during the day of, preferably via text message.
What are the photos and videos of the event used for? Am I able to refuse being filmed?
The photos and videos are mainly for publication in the organisation's social media accounts and web page.
Your permission to be photographed will be confirmed before any photos or video are taken. It's perfectly okay to refuse.
You are also allowed to withdraw your consent at any time during or after the event by notifying us at the event or i.e. via email afterwards.
